Position Purpose:  
Responsible for supervising and overseeing the day to day laboratory QA/QC operations. Assist staff on complex analysis of problems to determine chemical components of waste materials and appropriate utilization of site processors.  Ensures that the laboratory site is in proper compliance with company policies and procedures as well as with appropriate regulatory agencies. Train and assist newly hired laboratory technicians in the various QC utilized in the laboratory in identifying a variety of hazardous waste materials. Performs a variety of chemical, biological, and physical tests required for research, development or quality control on samples in accordance with company and regulatory requirements. Assists in special studies in the laboratory and possibly in the field.

Primary Duties/responsibilities: 

  • Performs a variety of chemical, biological, and physical tests required for research, development or quality control
  • Responsible for performing routine tasks and analyses on samples in accordance with company and regulatory requirements
  • May perform specialized analysis under the direction of the Plant Manager, Laboratory Manager or Laboratory Supervisor to support applied quality assurance and control procedures
  • Maintains the laboratory as directed for compliance with company quality and hygiene plans
  • Assists in special studies in the laboratory and possibly in the field
  • Conduct all login procedures, both manual and electronic, of samples delivered to the laboratory, ensuring proper labeling, including maintenance of paperwork and logbooks
  • Sub-sample a variety of materials, process and product samples and follow proper analytical methods required for compliance in accordance with established guidelines and training
  • The primary function of the QA/QC Chemist is improving existing testing procedures with the goal of improving testing efficiency, accuracy, precision, and repeatability
  • Resolves quality issues including instrument reliability, accuracy, precision, turnaround time, capability, and value
  • Comply with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies in the disposal of hazardous waste materials
  • Provide technical support and repair on analytical instruments such as PARR Calorimeters, Karl Fischer, Ion Chromatography, Closed Cup Flash Point, GC/MS, ICP-OES, CVAA - Mercury Analyzers, and Microwave Digesters
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education / Experience / Background: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or a related discipline required.
  • Prior work experience of 3 to 5 years in the hazardous waste industry preferred
  • Prior supervisor experience of 1 to 2 preferred.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: 

  • Time management: the ability to organize and manage multiple deadlines 
  • Strong mechanical and technical aptitude required.  Demonstrated knowledge and skills in wastewater equipment maintenance and troubleshooting desired.
  • Requires superior interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with client, public, and employees. 
  • Ability to effectively train individuals and groups both in the classroom and on the job required
  • Excellent management required.
  • Must possess superior organizational skills and be able to prioritize and work simultaneously on several projects.
  • Ability to operate within a team atmosphere required
  • Ability to assess priorities frequently and effectively perform under pressure required
  • Ability to operate computer and other office machines as needed.
  • Strong mathematics and computer skills including email, word processing, and spreadsheets required. 
  • Intermediate/advanced skills in applying Microsoft Word and Excel to prepare memos and conduct analysis of cost and process data desired
